Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

What exactly is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that permits a person of at least 21 years of age (“donor”) to appoint one or more individuals (“donee(s)”) to make decisions and act on the donor’s behalf should he or she lose mental capacity in the future.

A medical doctor or a registered psychiatrist may issue a certificate attesting that the donor understands the consequences of executing an LPA.

To encourage more Singaporeans to plan ahead and apply for an LPA, OPG has extended the LPA Form 1 application fee waiver until 31 March 2026.

Please note that once the LPA application has been submitted to OPG, no refund will be issued regardless of the application’s outcome, including rejection.

In the event that you lose the mental capacity to make your own decisions, a durable power of attorney can safeguard your future interests and welfare. This will also provide you with the freedom and option to appoint a decision-maker of your choosing. Additionally, it will prevent your family or loved ones from having to make such arrangements in the future.

You can create a Durable Power of Attorney if you are at least 21 years old and have the mental capacity to do so. You cannot be an undischarged bankrupt if you wish to submit an LPA application for property and affairs.
