The Significance of HPV Vaccine

Cervical cancer is the tenth most prevalent cancer among Singaporean women. It is frequently detected late and has the capacity to spread rapidly, so it can be quite aggressive.

Multiple strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are the primary cause of cervical cancer. The primary offenders are strains 16 and 18. They are responsible for up to 70% of all cervical cancers. A vaccine can prevent HPV, which is why it is such an important weapon in the fight against this fatal condition.

Most would suggest that girls between the ages of 9 and 26 receive the vaccine, as it is believed to be most effective before exposure to HPV. Nevertheless, the vaccine can still be administered to women older than 26, as it has been shown to be effective in reducing cervical cancer rates overall.

Three vaccinations are recommended over a six-twelve month period.

Once the course of vaccination has been completed, there is no need for a booster vaccine at this time. However, women should continue to undergo routine Pap smear screenings.

Men can also receive the HPV vaccine, which reduces the incidence of penile cancer and genital warts
